What is STEM and what do we do?

STEM is a combination of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subject areas. These areas are combined and taught all at the same time in order to provide opportunities for students to use these skills to solve real world problems.

In STEM class, students work through a curriculum called PROJECT LEAD THE WAY(or PLTW). In each PLTW unit, students work through various activities revolving around a central story that begins each unit. As students progress through the activities, they gain important information and knowledge related to the issues faced in the story they have read. After completing all activities, students work independently through a real world problem where the must PLAN, DESIGN, BUILD, TEST, and EXPLAIN their solution to the problem faced in the story.

Currently students are working on:
K-1: Learning the structures and functions of major organs and parts of the human body in order to create a cast to help a friend with a broken arm.
2-3: Learning about the process of animating movies and story books through CODING. Students have learned a great deal about coding and are working on their very own animated stories.
4-5: Learning about how video games and apps work by studying the coding process. Students have learned how to code using variable and loops and are currently in the process of creating their own working games.

About the STEM Teacher
Stem Teacher

Mr. Louderman has been teaching at A.D Stowell since 2015. He taught three years in the third grade classroom before making the transition to a dedicated STEM teacher in 2018. Mr. Louderman earned his bachelors degree in elementary education in 2015 from Hannibal La-Grange University. He continued his education shortly after that, beginning work on his Masters Degree and completing it in the Summer of 2018. Mr. Louderman has always enjoyed the hands on, design driven components of STEM and is very excited to be putting those skills to use with all grade levels!
