Standards Based Grading

STOWELL ELEMENTARY IS IMPROVING OUR GRADING PRACTICES

Students hard at work

We want to communicate what students know and are able to do based on Missouri Learning Standards.  Through standards-based grading, academic learning is the focus of what is recorded and communicated on student progress reports.

GRADING SCALE

Grades 1-5 use the 0 to 4 point grading scale below to communicate what students know and are able to do. Kindergarten uses a foundational grading scale that teachers will explain at parent-teacher conferences.

4
  ADVANCED

Student demonstrates knowledge which exceeds grade-level standards.

3  PROFICIENT

Student demonstrates independent mastery on grade-level standards. This is the target/goal for student success and should be celebrated.

2  DEVELOPING

Student demonstrates basic understanding and is partially proficient at meeting grade-level standards with teacher guidance.

1  EMERGING

With consistent help, student demonstrates some understanding of foundational skills and grade-level standards.

0  NO EVIDENCE

STOWELL STANDARDS-BASED GRADING

Grading practices focus on students’ demonstration of their mastery of academic standards. This helps teachers better understand what students truly know and can do. Factors not based on academic learning such as extra credit, bonus points, student behavior, work ethic, and homework performance are not combined with academic learning to help determine grades. Student behavior, work ethic, and homework performance will be communicated with families through progress reports. Progress reports that communicate students’ mastery of their learning standards will be issued at the end of every quarter.

STOWELL SBG FACTS
